Manga Monday #1

Sarashi Asobi by Tobina Touya

DescriptionShinigami Ai is bored with his job and to seek enjoyment he has an interest in high-school girl Ren who only has days left to live. She is the student council president at her school and really a good-hearted girl, but she is feared by the whole school because of her harsh way of speaking. Ai possesses her body and exposes her kind, true nature and so enjoys his "Sarashi Asobi (Exposing Game)". But gradually he is starting to feel an interest in being with Ren...(description from Baka-Updates Manga)

Okay, alright! So a Love story between a Shinigami and a girl who is destined to die. Now that's not something new in the shoujo world. Boy meets girl, fell in love with each other, loving each other will not end up well, yada yada, and then BOOM! Happy ending. We are all very aware of this formula however what made me think this manga is special?

The drawing style. Tobina Touya character's drawing is unique. I like how she drew the character's body slim even though the limbs are somewhat long. I also love the eyes, yes eyes that are somewhat big however it really matches the character. However, I think Tobina-san need to improve the arrangement of panels because sometimes it is a bot confusing to follow and her dialogue box are a little bit scattered but the good thing is that because she have a good foundation of  a character's psychology, voice or whatever the word for that is, from there you could distinguished them.

And I would to also emphasize on the character of this series. All of them are likable, no character was able to get on my nerves. And I love Ohba Ren's(female lead) personality. I wouldn't say she is a tsundere but she is the kind of girl who doesn't express herself too well in words and a bit of a ditsy. A ditsy girl so much that she could kill herself in a perfectly danger-free zone that you wouldn't be expecting that you could get killed in that kind of place.  Of course, I also love Ai's(male lead) personality. He is the easy going type but on the inside, a deep thinker or you could say a conflicted person.

Aside from the drawing style, this series is special in a way that even though it is shoujo with the typical formula for a fantasy plot, it doesn't feel that way. Wait, that's confusing. I mean it in a way how it didn't felt like it had a force drama(shinigami x normal human = forbidden love) that it felt like a slice of life. There is no uber-cheesy scenes, no love at first sight and the relationship was built chapter per chapter. And it even manage to have an unpredictable ending ;)

Overall, this series is a great read. I give it a 5/5!

Recommended for: People who are looking for a light romance. A cutesy romance with a good looking female and male lead as well as the minor characters lol. And those who are looking for a good plot for a shoujo manga.
